About The Application Process
Just as all Minnesota public schools do, LILA welcomes five-year-old kindergarten students and Upper School students equally without regard to their ethnicity, religion, or academic or economic standing—and LILA charges no tuition for Minnesota residents in grades K-12. However, you must submit an application form to be considered for enrollment.
As a public charter school, LILA limits its class sizes, depending on the grade and approval by the school’s board of directors. This means that all applicants are NOT GUARANTEED to be enrolled, unfortunately.
We use a random lottery system on January 15 each year to enroll new kindergarten and Upper School students, based on the applications received by the deadline approved by the school board (4:00 on the last school day prior to January 15) and according to charter school law. Enrollment preference applies only if an applicant has a parent that teaches at LILA or has siblings previously enrolled at LILA. No other enrollment preferences exist; specifically, living in Forest Lake is NOT a preference factor nor is attending LILA Kinder Prep.
Applicants with enrollment preference MUST submit an application prior to 4:00 p.m. on the last school day prior to the January 15 lottery to be automatically accepted to LILA. Their names are excluded from the random lottery. Applicants in the remaining pool will be randomly selected for enrollment and confirmation notices will be sent to the parents. When all kindergarten sections are full, a waiting list will be established by random lottery assignment. The FAQ section below may answer questions you have about submitting an application. If not, please contact us. We’re happy to help!
How To Submit Your Application
Complete the online application (you will need to create a simple online account and the form takes less than five minutes to complete). You may also request an application form at the school’s main office. Paper applications may be mailed to:
Lakes International Language Academy
246 11th Ave. S.E., Forest Lake, MN 55025
Applications are DUE by 4:00 p.m. on the last school day prior to January 15 in our main office to be considered for the January 15 enrollment lottery. This is not a postmark due date. You should receive an e-mail confirmation, if you submitted your application online. LILA is not responsible for lost, late, or misdirected applications.
General FAQs About Kindergarten Enrollment
If you have additional questions that we have not answered below, please contact us for assistance. We’re happy to chat about LILA and its potential for your student’s success!
Who can apply?
The parent or guardian of any child 5 years old on September 1 of the lottery year and living in Minnesota may submit an application.
Do I need to submit an application every year?
You do not need to re-submit an application for a child already enrolled at Lakes International Language Academy. However, if your address, phone number, or other information changes, please log on to Infinite Campus to provide an update.
Can my child ride the school bus to and from LILA?
Lakes International Language Academy contracts bus service with Forest Lake Area School District #831, and we can offer transportation to LILA students living within the #831 district. Any Minnesota child residing outside the #831 boundary is welcome, but will need to arrange transportation. Many students live outside the Forest Lake community, and you may find carpool groups near you.
Does my child need to live in Forest Lake to attend LILA?
As explained above, your child does not need to live in Forest Lake and there is no enrollment preference for Forest Lake residents. Students come from more than 20 different school districts to attend LILA; they are responsible for their own transportation.
My child is in kindergarten elsewhere now. Can I get her into a class next year?
Based on our past attrition rates, it is unlikely that there will be open seats in Grade 1. If there are, we ask that you please consider that our kindergartners will be developing second-language proficiency that would make it very difficult for a 1st-grader without that skill level to join in first grade and succeed in the language immersion classroom. We’re not saying it can’t be done, but the experts don’t recommend it. Please contact us directly to inquire about your situation.
Can I transfer my child from any other elementary school into your school?
Language immersion classes progress rapidly through the language-acquisition process. If your child is transferring from a similar immersion school, then we're likely to be a great fit. However, research shows that a child without previous immersion instruction may have difficulty succeeding in an established language immersion classroom. In other words, it’s very challenging for the new student to catch up with the class. We’re not saying it can’t be done, but the experts don’t recommend it. Please contact us directly for more information.
Do you accept early-entry kindergarten students?
We accept early entrants under certain circumstances. For example, an early entrant must pass a readiness test, which is paid for by you. Our early entrance assessment team will make the final decision based on the school’s early entrance policy. We encourage parents to consider our Kinder Prep program for 3- and 4-year-olds as well. Contact us for more information.
