As a parent, it always great to hear that your child is behaving out in public:)” - P. Johnson, Forest Lake

“My husband wasn’t convinced we should send our children to LILA when it first opened, until he started reading the peer-review research. We received an unsolicited email from Aspen Lofgren, daughter of Charles and Toni Lofgren, Forest Lake, that says so much about the impact of LILA on our students—not just as elementary students but as college students and tomorrow's global citizens. Aspen (below, right) and her mother posed for a snapshot. Here is Aspen's email, published with her permission.

Hello Shannon and Cam,

I am wondering if either of you could do me a huge favor.  I have recently watched the 10 year anniversary LILA video and realized that I have never shared my appreciation towards the people who made this school possible.  I am hoping either of you two could possibly send this to anyone who has helped LILA become possible.  I remember you two the most because I actually saw you around the school.  I wanted to thank you both for being such incredible and dedicated people and changing lives. Also, I know there are many people who made this possible but were rarely seen.  So below is just a little thank you letter to everyone.

Aspen Lofgren here!  If you do not remember me or know me, I was part of first graduating class of LILA in 2007 (I think it was, I am now getting old so don't judge me)!  I have recently came across the 10 year anniversary LILA video and could not believe how far LILA has come and that so much time has passed since I have been there.  I literally remember my first day of LILA and walking into the school.  I remember being frightened because it still had a creepy hospital look to it, but the small amount of faculty the school had made me feel at ease. Senora Bobbi Jo was my teacher for fourth grade and I remember hearing gibberish words coming out her mouth and I had no idea what she was saying. I can remember now that she was saying such "easy" words such as, "Hello, My name is ..... Welcome to LILA", and so on.   I am currently going into my sophomore year in college and I am just realizing how grateful I am for LILA.  I am currently majoring in Spanish and Psychology with a minor in Gender, Women, Sexuality Studies.  (Possibly changing Psychology into International Studies, but we will see).  I am looking into studying abroad for my junior year, possibly Spain or Costa Rica.

LILA has advanced me so far into not only the Spanish language but also culture.  I am intrigued about learning about other cultures and languages.  I believe LILA is the reason for this.

I would love to thank everyone personally who has helped LILA be what it is today, unfortunately I do not believe that it is possible. So an e-mail is the next best thing.  I appreciate everyone who has been involved. I will never take the LILA experience for granted. What LILA does is incredible and for a fact changes lives in a positive manner. Thank you everyone for making this possible!

Pura vida y mucha felicidad,
Aspen Lofgren

“I have been at LILA for seven years, over these seven years I have learned so much, I can now talk fluently in Spanish and also read in Spanish. The teachers at LILA are great and very supportive, and helped me through my years at LILA.” - E. Neudecker, Alumnus

“I love LILA!!! It is the best place to work and a wonderful school for my kids. My oldest is finishing 6th grade and my youngest is in the first class of Chinese immersion. Even though I have been there since the beginning, I value the IB and immersion programs more and more each year.” - K. Rodriguez, Forest Lake

What World Leaders And Experts Say

“In a global economy, where the most valuable skill you can sell is your knowledge, a good education is no longer just a pathway to opportunity. It is a prerequisite.” - President Obama, Speech, February 24, 2009

“Research demonstrates that learning a foreign language proficiently is best begun at an early age using the language immersion program model. This innovative program model provides sufficient time during which children learn subject matter in and use a new language. They accomplish this while becoming fully proficient in English and mastering subject knowledge.” - Dr. Tara Fortune, CARLA, U of MN

“By the time the children born today leave school, China is set to be the world’s largest economy. So it’s time to look beyond the traditional focus on French and German and get many more children learning Mandarin.” - David Cameron, United Kingdom Premier, December 4, 2013 in the Financial Times (see the entire article: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/056eb1da-5ccd-11e3-81bd-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2n5zZZjw8)
