International Travel
Global Citizenship Through International Travel
As part of our mission to prepare global citizens through language study, LILA works to provide a variety of travel opportunities to our students. We work with trusted partners to plan educational travel that allow students to put their IB attributes and language skills to use. Limited scholarships are available for many trips and families are encouraged to work with the LILA Booster club to raise funds to apply to school travel programs. Please use the following information to plan which of the upcoming international travel opportunities would be a good fit for your LILA student.

Quote from a former participant:
I feel like this trip supports LILA’s mission because this was a once in a lifetime opportunity that a lot of kids don't get. We didn’t go down there just to see things, we went down to learn, learn about the world around us and to use the language skills LILA taught us and actually put them to use in real situations. This trip taught us a lot that will prepare us for going to other countries in the future and being inquirers.
Environmental Leadership in the Dominican Republic
We are planning our third trip to the Dominican Republic to take place in the winter of the 26-27 school year. Students will tour the historic town of Santo Domingo, go white water rafting on a mountain river and then spend three days learning and working alongside students at an Environmental Institute in Jarabacoa. After we say farewell to our new friends with a dance party (including Bachata lessons), we have some time at the beach. Students go snorkeling and tour a mangrove. The whole time they will be learning about Dominican food, history and culture while putting their Spanish skills to use.
Info meeting on Wednesday, September 24th at 6pm
Open to students in 9th-12th grades during the 26-27 school year in Immersion or phase 3+ Spanish. (currently in 8th-11th, immersion or phase 2+). Scholarships are available.

What is the CASVI Student Exchange?

This program offers students an unparalleled opportunity to immerse themselves in Spanish culture, build lifelong friendships, enhance their language skills, and gain a broader perspective on the world. It is a transformative experience that empowers students to step out of their comfort zones, develop independence, and become true global citizens, all while continuing their academic journey.
Casvi International American School, in Madrid, offers an international education through the American curriculum and the International Baccalaureate. With more than 35 years of experience in education, Grupo Educativo Casvi has a highly qualified teaching staff. Teachers teach students from the heart to become citizens of the world, with strong academic and personal skills. The Casvi exchange is available to students in 8th and 9th grade. Because students will attend school in Spain, this program is for Spanish Immersion students or Phase 3+ students with a teacher recommendation.

Other Travel Opportunities
Broadway and the Arts in New York City
We are planning our second trip to New York City to take place in June of 2026. New York City has many global qualities and is available through the same trusted travel partner as our Europe trip. Students will tour many parts of the city, including a cruise around the Statue of Liberty, get an inside look at Radio City Music Hall, visit the National September 11 Memorial and spend an afternoon participating in a workshop taught by a Broadway professional. Students will also see two Broadway shows, visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and enjoy views of NYC from one of its iconic skyscrapers, among other things. The whole time they will be learning about theatre and the arts and the history of NYC while being immersed in the culture of the most populous city in the United States.
Open to students currently in 8th-12th grades. Scholarships are available.

Student Reflections

"It really made me think about the differences in other countries’ cultures and it has really made me more open-minded.”

"I feel like this trip supports LILA's mission because this was a once-in-a lifetime opportunity that a lot of kids don't get. We didn't go down there just to see things, we went down to learn, learn about the world around us and to use the language skills LILA taught us and actually put them to use in real situations. This trip taught us a lot that will prepare us for going to other countries in the future and being inquirers."

"I learned how we are very privileged in many aspects. I learned how to use my Spanish better and new words. I learned about the Dominican culture and history, food, agriculture, lifestyle, and music. I learned patience, and how to live with strangers for a week."

"We used our language skills a lot during the trip, and before the trip we inquired about all of the places we would visit and acquired lots of good information."
